Description
BECCS at Drax
Drax Power Station in North Yorkshire is already the largest decarbonisation project in Europe, having converted four of its generating units to use biomass as an alternative to coal.
Now, Drax is going even further by modifying the power station to create negative emissions while generating electricity, using bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS).
Negative emissions are critical to deliver net zero. To tackle climate change and reach net zero, the world needs to remove carbon dioxide that’s already in the atmosphere – as well as reducing our CO2 emissions today.
The first phase of BECCS at Drax will permanently remove 8 million tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere each year, making Drax Power Station the world’s largest single site carbon capture project and delivering all the negative emissions required for Government to fulfil its 5MtCO2 by 2030 ambition.
Building BECCS will accelerate economic growth for the Yorkshire and Humber region: underpinning the world’s first zero carbon industrial cluster, creating new high-skilled jobs, and putting the region at the heart of a global green economy.
How to get involved
To make BECCS at Drax a reality, Drax is working with Worley to provide pre-FEED services for two biomass-to-BECCS unit upgrades. The contract includes development of plant layout, cost estimation and schedules for FEED, detailed engineering, procurement and construction.
